Atmospheres of Rocky Exoplanets

چکیده

Rocky planets are common around other stars, but their atmospheric properties remain largely unconstrained. Thanks to a wealth of recent planet discoveries and upcoming advances in observing capability, we poised characterize the atmospheres dozens rocky exoplanets this decade. Theoretical understanding exoplanet has advanced considerably last few years, yielding testable predictions evolution, chemistry, dynamics even possible biosignatures. Here review key progress field date discuss future objectives. Our major conclusions as follows: 1) Many may form with initial H$_2$-He envelopes that later lost space, likely due combination stellar UV/X-ray irradiation internal heating. 2) After early stages wide diversity compositions is expected, variations host star flux, escape rates, interior exchange factors. 3) Observations have ruled out presence hydrogen-dominated on several nearby exoplanets, any thick atmosphere one target. More detailed characterization these others will become near future. 4) Exoplanet biosphere searches an exciting goal. However, reliable detections for representative sample require further capability improvements our abiotic planetary processes.

Biosignature Gases in H-dominated Atmospheres on Rocky Exoplanets

Super Earth exoplanets are being discovered with increasing frequency and some will be able to retain stable H2-dominated atmospheres. We study biosignature gases on exoplanets with thin H2 atmospheres and habitable surface temperatures, by using a model atmosphere with photochemistry, and biomass estimate framework for evaluating the plausibilty of a range of biosignature gas candidates. We fi...

Stability of Co2 Atmospheres on Desiccated M Dwarf Exoplanets

We investigate the chemical stability of CO2-dominated atmospheres of desiccated M dwarf terrestrial exoplanets using a one-dimensional photochemical model. Around Sun-like stars, CO2 photolysis by Far-UV (FUV) radiation is balanced by recombination reactions that depend on water abundance. Planets orbiting M dwarf stars experience more FUV radiation, and could be depleted in water due to M dwa...

Titania may produce abiotic oxygen atmospheres on habitable exoplanets

The search for habitable exoplanets in the Universe is actively ongoing in the field of astronomy. The biggest future milestone is to determine whether life exists on such habitable exoplanets. In that context, oxygen in the atmosphere has been considered strong evidence for the presence of photosynthetic organisms. In this paper, we show that a previously unconsidered photochemical mechanism b...

Helium Atmospheres on Warm Neptune- and Sub-neptune-sized Exoplanets and Applications

Warm Neptuneand sub-Neptune-sized exoplanets in orbits smaller than Mercury’s are thought to have experienced extensive atmospheric evolution. Here we propose that a potential outcome of this atmospheric evolution is the formation of helium-dominated atmospheres. The hydrodynamic escape rates of Neptuneand sub-Neptune-sized exoplanets are comparable to the diffusion-limited escape rate of hydro...
